A Saturday afternoon at a Christmas market. Your customer has chosen two mugs, the wrapping is ready, and they reach for a bank card. You would like to finish the sale without adding another card reader, charger and box to the stall. Accepting contactless payments on a phone can make sense here.
For a market or seasonal trader, however, the cost of a tap is only part of the decision. What will you still have to pay in January, once the stall is back in storage? SoftPOS can suit a short season if your phone, contract and on-site workflow are all suitable.
A provider's SoftPOS app accepts contactless payments on a supported smartphone. You enter the amount, the customer taps their card or mobile wallet, and you wait for confirmation of a successful transaction. There is no separate physical reader, but you still need an acquiring agreement, approved registration and a compatible phone.
This can be practical for a solo gift, ceramics or craft trader with limited counter space who moves between fairs. Alongside Visa and Mastercard, supported Apple Pay and Google Pay payments can be convenient. Check the actual card and wallet support of the service you select.
NFC alone is not enough. The exact phone model, operating system, security requirements and app support all matter. Our guide to SoftPOS in Hungary provides background on the technology.
For a fair lasting a few weeks, add up the entire commitment: setup or activation fees, transaction costs, fixed charges, account and transfer costs, and the conditions for pausing or ending the agreement. Buying a new phone is also a cost, even if there is no terminal rental.
Our article on hidden costs in card acceptance explains what a headline percentage can leave out.
Consider an entirely hypothetical illustration: two active months, each with HUF 600,000 in card turnover, totalling HUF 1,200,000. At an average basket of HUF 6,000, that means 200 payments. These are not actual provider tariffs.
This illustration excludes other fees, minimum charges, taxes and device purchases. It does not establish that one pricing model is always better: off-season commitments can reverse the result. Ask for the full cost of your actual agreement.
POSnavigator's calculation on 16 October 2026 returned the following four calculable examples for HUF 600,000 monthly card turnover, a HUF 6,000 average basket, one SoftPOS device, HUF settlement and domestic consumer cards. The example profile is a sole trader selling gifts and souvenirs under MCC 5947.
These are not two-month seasonal quotes, monthly subscription fees or personalised offers. Each monthly average is one forty-eighth of the calculator's 48-month total, assuming continuous example turnover. It is not the amount billed in any particular month and excludes buying a phone if you need one. Multiplying this average by two would not establish your short-season cost. A missing calculable tariff for a custom-priced service does not mean it is free; request a quote to compare it. These four examples are neither a complete market survey nor a provider recommendation. Source: POSnavigator offer calculation with the inputs above; verify provider conditions before signing.
If staff take turns at the stall, queues are continuous, or orders and calls arrive on the same phone, a dedicated payment device may be more convenient. If you need printed payment slips, cash-register integration or backup connectivity, assess the entire workflow rather than device size alone. A separate terminal is not automatically weatherproof or independent of internet access.
Our comparison covers the alternatives: POS terminal, mobile card reader or SoftPOS?
Card confirmation and a tax receipt are separate. SoftPOS alone does not automatically handle receipt issuance or NAV reporting. Several processes may be integrated on one phone, but the selected solution and your operation must meet the applicable requirements.
A trader travelling between fairs is not necessarily a mobile shop in the legal sense. NAV states that cloud-based e-cash registers cannot be used in legally classified mobile shops or mobile service premises. Confirm the receipt and cash-register rules for your actual activity with your accountant and NAV's current guidance.
Potentially, provided the provider accepts your business and operating model and the contract suits the season. Ask specifically about minimum terms, pausing and charges after the season.
No. Your device must meet the provider's supported hardware, system and security requirements. The specific app's compatibility matters on both Android and iPhone.
Do not assume the same profile applies. Enter your actual business form and activity and confirm acceptance eligibility. The gift-retailer illustration is not a general offer for agricultural producers.
No. For a short season, the number of billed months, setup, transfers and termination conditions can change the total.
For a few weekends or an Advent season, start with the number of active months, expected card turnover and average basket. Then compare phone-based acceptance and obtain written confirmation of the fees and contractual conditions for your full season. The right arrangement works at the stall and does not leave unexpected commitments afterwards.
The related page starts from a gift-retailer example. Continue with your actual activity, business form and turnover; the comparison calculation does not replace a provider quote for a short season.
