ELV online

ELV is one of Germany's popular online payment methods. It allows quick and easy payments, is relatively cheap (compared to credit cards), and suited for one-time payments (immediate payment and swift settlement) without the need to use a card upon checkout. ELV Online (electronic direct debit) is a payment method common in Germany, where the amount is deducted from the current account by direct debit.
The essence of ELV is that the customer provides their bank account details (IBAN, BIC) and the merchant withdraws the amount. The transaction is not real-time and there is no immediate approval, so the risk of fraud is higher. For this reason, it is increasingly being pushed into the background in the German market in favor of SEPA Direct Debit and card payments with strong customer authentication.
Unavailable or unusual payment method. Banks in Hungary do not support the ELV system, as it is a solution tied to German bank accounts. The Hungarian banking infrastructure is not compatible with the ELV-based debit process.
Limited availability countries:
- Germany: ELV is traditionally widely used, mainly in online stores, mobile operators, insurance companies, etc.
- Austria: supported in some cases, as the banking system is similar to Germany.
Not typical / not supported countries: It is not widespread in most other EU member states - e.g. France, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Spain, etc.
Local banking regulations and infrastructure differ, SEPA direct debit or card payments are typical.
ELV only works with a German or Austrian bank account, so it cannot be used in other countries – be it the USA, UK, Asia, Latin America.
It is not compatible with national banking systems or global standards (e.g. ACH, UPI, Faster Payments, etc.).
