Bancontact is the most important bank card in Belgium, with over 15 million Bancontact cards in circulation. Bancontact is a Belgian bank card payment system, mainly used in Belgium. Bancontact cards are issued primarily by Belgian banks and the system is supported by local infrastructure.

Acceptance in Hungary:

Generally not accepted in Hungarian shops, restaurants, webshops.

It may work in some touristic places or international acceptance points (for example, on terminals that handle multiple networks), but this is not typical.

If the Bancontact card has Maestro or Visa/Mastercard co-badging (i.e. it has the logos of multiple card networks on it), it may still be accepted by one of the networks - but this is not guaranteed.

✅ Where is it definitely accepted? Belgium: Full acceptance in stores, online shopping, service providers. Luxembourg and some neighboring border areas: Partial acceptance may occur.

⚠️ Where only to a limited extent or not at all? In other EU member states (e.g. France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Hungary): Bancontact cannot be used on its own at most terminals because:

• It is not part of the international card networks (like Visa or Mastercard).
• Acceptance would require separate technical and contractual integration, which few undertake.

🪪 What if Bancontact also has the Maestro or Mastercard logo? These so-called co-branded cards can now also work via an international network.

• In this case, the transaction is not made as Bancontact, but on the Mastercard or Maestro network.
• This is the most common way for Belgian cardholders to pay abroad.

Bancontact is a local Belgian payment system, so it is even less accepted outside the EU than in EU member states. Bancontact can only work if the card is also connected to another international payment network (e.g. Mastercard, Maestro – co-branded cards). Online payment in foreign webshops: works with e-merchants that have specifically integrated the Bancontact system (e.g. some European platforms that also serve the Belgian market).
