Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)
(Card payment online)
DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) is a payment service that allows international cardholders to pay in their home currency when making a purchase abroad, rather than in the local currency of the merchant.
During the transaction, the POS terminal or the online payment interface identifies the card's country of origin and offers the customer a choice: – to pay in the local currency (e.g., HUF), or – in their own currency (e.g., EUR, USD, GBP, etc.).
The main advantage of DCC is that it provides immediate visibility of the exchange rate and the exact amount payable in the customer's home currency, enabling greater cost transparency. The DCC service is typically offered by third-party providers (not the issuing bank), and the applied exchange rate often includes a markup over the mid-market rate, which generates revenue for the merchant or the provider.
Key features:
- Real-time currency conversion at the point of sale
- Transparent exchange rate display to the customer
- Optional service – the customer chooses
- Revenue sharing opportunity for the merchant
Who is it recommended for?
DCC services are primarily recommended for merchants and service providers who regularly serve international customers or tourists, and wish to:
- earn additional revenue through currency conversion fees,
- enhance the customer experience for foreign cardholders,
- offer transparent and familiar pricing in the shopper’s home currency.
Ideal DCC users include:
- Tourism-related businesses: hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops
- Merchants near international airports, fuel stations
- High-footfall downtown retailers
- Mid-sized and large enterprises with frequent international clientele
The merchant benefit: By allowing cardholders to pay in their home currency, merchants can unlock a new revenue stream while improving payment convenience and satisfaction.
